With star-studded lineups every year, it’s no wonder Good Vibes Festival is one of the biggest music festivals in Southeast Asia. Since its debut in 2013, internationally renowned acts have graced the Good Vibes Festival stage – including Lorde, SZA, Alt-J, Phoenix, G-Eazy, Dua Lipa, The Smashing Pumpkins, Ellie Goulding, Mark Ronson, Disclosure, The 1975 and many more.
This July, expect the biggest Good Vibes Festival lineup yet in Gohtong Jaya, Genting Highlands with headlining acts Rae Sremmurd and Yuna, including Grammy-award winning artists Daniel Caesar and Mura Masa, among over 30 artists who are set to perform through the jam-packed weekend.
The origin of Good Vibes Festival and the man behind it
However, it wasn’t all smooth sailing for Good Vibes Festival, when it was almost cancelled entirely in 2016 due to a struggle in sales. Wan Alman, one of the founders of the now massive festival, also shared that it was difficult to find the right identity, and in turn finding the audience.
They were inspired by unique and successful music festivals around the world, namely Coachella in the US, and Fuji Rock Festival in Japan.
“Music festivals are largely defined by their artist lineups, and it was hard to curate the ideal lineup with the budget limitations that we initially had.”
Coincidentally, it was the same year when Good Vibes Festival almost got cancelled that they took a leap of faith and expanded it to a two-day festival. Sure enough, the festival started to gain traction and it achieved a full sold out festival the following year.
Currently, Good Vibes Festival is the only international music festival of its kind in Malaysia.
Wan Alman says that it’s important to expose local music lovers to world class talents and provide them with the opportunity to experience music festivals, because not everyone has the means to attend festivals overseas.
A platform for local acts to step up
Wan Alman feels that Good Vibes Festival serves as a platform to amplify local musical talents and provides them with the experience putting on large scale performances. This is why in addition to its stellar lineup of renowned international acts, many favourite local artists will also perform at the dazzling weekend.
Many local acts are hopeful to gain new fans with their unique sounds, and folk-pop trio The Impatient Sisters are looking forward to leave a lasting impression. “We have a great set ready for the big day, with beautiful visuals accompanying our songs and a full band playing with us!”
Electronic duo Dizkopolis also aims to utilise Good Vibes Festival as a platform to promote their music. “We also see Good Vibes Festival as not just a musical festival, but as a blank canvas where we can curate our different sound palettes.”
Of course, performing among award-winning international artists can be daunting, but the local acts at Good Vibes Festival are unfazed. In fact, they’re ready for the biggest performance of their careers yet.
Four-piece indie alternative-rock band Midnight Fusic admits that they’re super excited for the festival and can’t wait to give it their all to put on a phenomenal show. “We’re hoping to give the crowd an incredible and a truly unforgettable time there during our set.”
This will also be indie-pop band Lost Spaces’ first big festival performance. “Playing at Good Vibes Festival definitely gives us an opportunity to showcase the art to people who might not have even heard of us before, and that’s an exciting prospect to think about.”
Wan Alman says that if this is your first time to Good Vibes Festival, you’re in for a treat. Festival-goers get to enjoy the new additions to the festival, such as an expanded festival layout, a new-and-improved Electric Fields stage, and bespoke art installations by some of the best local artists.
